Informed Franchising - Name Recognition Assessment

Name recognition is one of the key advantages to owning and operating a franchise. However label recognition, and its nonverbal component, brand awareness, are not necessarily free and beneficial aspects of every franchise. In analytical terms, there are two theoretical perspectives or ‘lens’ through which a potential (or for that matter, current) franchiser can view the label recognition and the brand awareness of their product: the realist model and the idealist model.

A successfully run franchise must be able to pit its successes against its weaknesses, and in this frame of mind, it is vital for a franchiser to be able to assess the viability of the two theoretical perspectives. Even if you have made up your mind about brand acknowledgment and are firmly set in your beliefs, it is important to be able to relate to both schools of thought so that you can properly understand the practical benefits to pursuing name acknowledgment within each framework.

The first perspective to be covered is what may be referred to as the realist approach to recognition. The realist approach stresses the fundamentally changing and uncertain nature of a franchises’ name acknowledgment and brand awareness. To be clear, realists do recognize that identification for a business can lead to substantial profits and success for a franchise owner- their theoretical disagreement with idealists is not over whether or not label recognition can cause growth in business and in profits; rather, it is the extent to which a franchiser should rely on the idea that profits and growth will come as a result of brand recognition. A realist might suggest that brand attribution benefits companies that are already hugely successful and are on an upswing, but that there are very businesses that are constantly on an upswing- you might say, that for the realist, what goes up must eventually come down, and it is here that you can also begin to see the relevance of the name: realist. Realism refers not to presumptions that individuals professing this theory have to a privileged view of reality, but rather, a fundamental belief that the dynamics of label recognition and product awareness can be compared with the physics of other real world objects that correspond to real world forces. This is to say, that realists believe that attribution has both its positives and its negatives.

On the other hand, idealists subscribe to the belief, common among journalists and celebrities that ‘there is no such thing as bad publicity’. This theory suggests that while the businesses that are associated with a name or a trademark may undergo fluctuations in success and profit in the real world, the positive influence that being associated with a well known label or brand or set of symbols has on your franchise is uniform and is not dependent on the success of the company to which those symbols correspond at any given time. This is to say that just the fact that you are representing a well known company will cause your franchise to be more successful and yield more profits than if you had pursued a business venture without label or brand association.

Considered in turn, both theoretical perspectives can be very convincing. The reason that one needs to understand the general ideas behind both realism and idealism is that, for certain, there is no one right answer to the question of name identification. Because of the wealth of other factors that influence the success of a franchise - such as management, location, service, macroeconomic variables, to name a few- it is impossible to isolate name recognition and its affect on a company during any time period. If you are considering operating a franchise, or are currently operating one now, regardless of your point of view, you need to know your options keep an open mind with regards to name recognition and brand awareness.
